Part of the McAlester, Oklahoma mystery.
I had thought this was a picture of a couple of boyhood friends of my grandfather in South Philly, but when I scanned and enlarged it, I was able to read some of the signs in the back: Busby Theatre, Palace (Theatre?) and "Queen of the..." A few minutes and searches later, I came upon both the Busby and Palace Theatres in McAlester, OK. And I think that's the Busby Theatre in the distant background. I also found a few "Queen of the... " movie titles; namely "Queen of the Sea," starring Annette Kellerman, 1918.
I suspect that the boy in the foreground is the young man in the other McAlester photos. But I still don't have any knowledge of a family connection to McAlester, Oklahoma. I never thought too much of the more recent photos, as I assumed it was a friend who was traveling. But now that these cover a wider time span, I'm intrigued.
The boys are wearing yarmulkes. ellenmc posted a photo:
The beginning photo in the McAlester, Oklahoma mystery.
Back of photo reads "Guigui (sic) Levy and myself" and is stamped by Brown's Studio, McAlester, OK. This was in a batch of photos of my grandparents'; there are several photos of this man.
There is a Levy family in McAlester, Oklahoma in the 1920 Census: father Nathan, a clothing merchant, mother Pauline, daughters Regina and Dorothy. Is "Guigui" Regina? And what do these people have to do with my grandparents? I did find someone I think might be Regina, who died in the mid-1990s, but I don't want that published here out of respect for privacy.
Regina's a cutie - I think she's eating an apple. ellenmc posted a photo:
